New Delhi: In order to improve domestic water transport, 111 waterways have been announced in 24 states, including 10 in Tamil Nadu, Minister of State for Water Power Prakalat Singh Patel has responded in writing in the Lok Sabha.
Minister of State for Water Power Prakalat Singh Patel gave a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Thursday to a question raised about the number of waterways notified by the Central Commission across the country including Tamil Nadu. Out of which, 111 waterways have been notified in 24 states to improve inland waterway transport. The list has been prepared as per the National Waterways Act 2016.
Accordingly, in Tamil Nadu National Waterway 4, North Buckingham Canal (Bethganjam to Chennai Central Railway Station -316 km), South Buckingham Canal (Chennai Central Railway Station to Marakkanam -110 km), Marakkanam to Puducherry (Khalvelik Pond Via -22 km) is located.
National Waterway 20 Bhavani river (95 km), 55 Kaveri-Kolidham river (311 km), 69 Manimuthar (5 km), 75 Balaru (142 km), 77 He said that Palaiyaru (20 km), Ponnayaru (126 km) in 80 and Thamirapharani river (62 km) in 99 have been declared as waterways.
