Jhansi. A major accident occurred last night due to fire at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The fire broke out in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital at around 10:45 pm. District Officer (DM) Avinash Kumar has confirmed the death of 10 newborn children in this accident.
16 other children have been seriously injured in this accident and are fighting for their lives. The district administration and medical team are busy handling the situation. Jhansi District Magistrate Avinash Kumar said that the fire broke out due to a short circuit in the NICU at around 10:45 pm. All the children present outside the NICU were evacuated safely in time, while there were difficulties in evacuating the children inside.
At present the death of 10 children has been confirmed. DM said that in the outer part of NICU, children with relatively less serious condition are kept, while in the inner part, children with serious condition are treated. At the time of the accident, more than 50 children were admitted in the NICU. On receiving information about the accident, fire brigade vehicles and senior officials of the district reached the spot.
After the fire was brought under control, the children were taken out. Jhansi SSP Sudha Singh said that the treatment of 16 children who were seriously burnt in the accident is going on. According to the statement issued in Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the accident and directed the district administration to provide proper treatment to the injured children. Besides, orders have also been given to investigate this incident.
