10 Tips to Securing your Home Network.

In this internet-dependent world, your WiFi connection has become a very important tool, and you need to be careful about it.

Often people do not care about the security of their WiFi networks, and it can easily be categorized as one of the most dangerous things. Now that we are living in the times where we are always connected over the internet connection, a time of rising smart devices, and smart homes, we need to take precautions for securing our home network.

Surprisingly, it is not even hard. You just need to follow some steps as rules and make sure that you do not compromise on these ever. We are certain that keeping these measures in check would ensure a secure home network for you.

You can also start by connecting to a reliable internet service, such as CenturyLink Internet. This provider not only offers high internet speeds up to 940 Mbps via its fiber optic connection but also comes with McAfee protection that keeps your internet connection safe from any potential cyber-attack.

However, you would also need to proceed and lock on these following rules to seal the final lock for WiFi security.

  1. Change the default login credentials for your router.

Many routers come with default username and password combinations that are easily guessable. By changing the login credentials, you can prevent unauthorized access to your router and network.

  1. Use a strong and unique password for your network.

A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using personal information or easily guessable words in your password.

It is most recommended that you change your WiFi password every once in a while, as this would also disconnect all the previously connected devices and will give you a fresh start on the router cache.

You will also experience better internet speeds through this.

  1. Enable WPA2 encryption on your network.

WPA2 is the most secure form of wireless encryption and helps to protect your network from unauthorized access. This is important so that any slightly suspicious device signals cannot intervene in your wireless connectivity, hence keeping your connection safe.

  1. Disable remote management of your router.

Unless you need to remotely manage your router, it is best to disable this feature to prevent unauthorized access to your network.

  1. Keep your router’s firmware updated.

Manufacturers release firmware updates to fix security vulnerabilities and improve performance. Keeping your router’s firmware updated will help to ensure the security of your network.

You can keep auto-updates on so that you do not have to worry about any pending firmware updates.

  1. Use a firewall to protect your network.

A firewall can help to block unauthorized access to your network and protect your devices from malicious software and hackers, therefore do not undermine its importance.

  1. Limit network access to only trusted devices.

Do not allow everyone to connect to your WiFi. By only allowing devices you trust to connect to your network, you can reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

To do so, you can set up a guest network and allow limited internet access to your guests that you can delete later on.

  1. Take Precautions to Avoid Phishing Threats

Be aware of common security threats such as phishing, malware, and ransomware, and take steps to protect your devices from these types of attacks.

  1. Use a VPN

Use VPN to encrypt your internet traffic and protect your online activity from being tracked by hackers or advertisers.

People often think of VPN use only for ill purposes, but it can surely help mask your connection, hence a proven step for your WiFi’s security.

  1. Router Placement is Important for Security

We do know about how important router placement is your better WiFi connectivity and reach, but did you know that it can also help in your router’s security as well?

Yes, you can create a secure home network by placing your router in the most optimal location in the house just enough for it to reach every corner of your house. This would prevent any stranger, and passerby (a potential hacker) from connecting to your WiFi.

Therefore, your router positioning does play an integral role in protecting your home network.

Closing Remarks

It is important to secure your home network, and not tread this road lightly at all. A slight casual slip-up can cost you to lose your files and personal data. Therefore, you must be careful and not compromise your WiFi security. Especially in this world with the Internet of Things, this has become unavoidable.
