So far, 109 ships have confirmed their participation in the 33rd edition of the Al Gaffal Race, which is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, during the period from next Saturday to the 19th of this month.
The anticipated race, organized by the Dubai International Marine Sports Club since 1991, starts from Sir Bu Nair Island, passing through Comoros Island, to the finish line on the shores of Dubai, a distance of more than 50 nautical miles.
Among the participating ships are: Nimran 211, Hashim 199, Ghazi 103, Al-Shaqi 96, Al-Raed 92, Serdal 83, Buraq 33, Zelzal 25, Atlas 12, and Al-Qafai 4.
For his part, member of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the Al Qaffal Race 33 and event supervisor, Mohammed Al Falahi, praised the great turnout for participation in the event, which confirms the great place that the race occupies in the hearts of the people of the Emirates and fans of traditional marine sports as a historical value whose story began in 1991.
He said: “Registration to participate in the race will be closed before the race organizing committee delegation departs for Sir Bu Nair Island, according to the organizing committee’s plans to move there in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Organizing Committee in light of reports on the state of the sea,” noting that “the number is expected to increase as the race continues.” Receiving applications through the club’s electronic portal.
It is noteworthy that the Al Qaffal Race witnessed the setting of an unprecedented record in heritage marine races, as the 29th edition in 2019 recorded the participation of 131 ships, the highest number in the history of the major event.
