Agartala: BJP, which has an absolute majority in Tripura, forms the government for the 2nd time. The BJP coalition has retained power in Nagaland. In Meghalaya, the stalemate continues with no party getting a majority.
Assembly elections were held in Tripura on 16th of last month and in Meghalaya and Nagaland on 27th. The votes cast in these 3 northeastern states were counted yesterday.
Out of the 60 constituencies in Tripura, the BJP contested 55 seats and its ally IPPT in the remaining seats. In this, BJP won 32 constituencies and IPFT one. While 31 MLAs are needed to form the government, the BJP, which has an absolute majority, is forming the government for the second time.
Nagaland is ruled by the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP. In the assembly elections, NTPP contested 40 constituencies and BJP 20 constituencies. In this, NTPP won 25 seats and BJP won 12 seats. With 31 MLAs needed to prove majority, the BJP coalition has retained power. Nagaland Chief Minister and senior NTPP leader Neibu Rio is set to take over as Chief Minister again.
Meghalaya has 60 assembly constituencies. Elections in Sogyong constituency were postponed due to the death of a candidate. Voting was held for other 59 constituencies.
The ruling National People’s Party has won 26 seats. United Democratic Party won 11 seats, Congress 5 and Nationalist Congress 5 seats. BJP got 2 seats. With no party getting a majority, Meghalaya continues to be tussled.
The National People’s Party, which has won more seats, is again expected to form a coalition government with the support of the BJP and other regional parties.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party leader Conrad Sangha has sought support from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
By-election Results: By-elections were held for 2 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra. In this, Congress won Kaspa Peth and BJP won Chinchwad.
Congress wins Sagartiki constituency in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress embraced Dhol V in this constituency as the Communist parties formed an alliance with the Congress.
In Jharkhand’s Ramgarh constituency, the All Jharkhand Students’ Union won. The BJP has won unopposed in the Lumla assembly by-election in Arunachal Pradesh.
