Kolkata: In West Bengal, Durga Puja is celebrated every year on the occasion of Dussehra. In particular, pujas are conducted by more than 40,000 community groups across the state. Every year on the occasion of Dussehra, special pandals are erected by each community group and Durga idols are installed. Earlier, the idols are made in one place and taken to the place where the puja takes place. The place of worship will be decorated with lights and flowers. Food will be given on puja days.
Priests, security guards, electrical workers, wage laborers etc. get employment through this. According to Partho Ghosh, president of an integrated organization of 400 community puja groups (Poram Bar Durgatsap), “Durga Puja is celebrated every year to preserve our culture. The preparations for this will start 3 to 4 months in advance. 3 lakh people get employment through this. The place of worship will be decorated with lights and flowers. We are expecting that around Rs.40 thousand crores of business will be done around Durga Puja,” he said. Durga Puja has not been celebrated in the last 2 years due to the corona pandemic. But this year there is no restriction in force and the festival is being celebrated with enthusiasm. It is worth mentioning that even though the state government is stuck in severe financial crisis, it has announced that 40 thousand puja groups will be given Rs.60 thousand each.
