At least 56 people were killed the day before yesterday in the city of N’Zerekore, the second largest city in Guinea, in “deadly stampedes” as a result of protests by fans against refereeing decisions during a football match, according to what the government reported yesterday.
The Guinean government said: “Protests against refereeing decisions caused stone-throwing by fans, leading to deadly stampedes.”
She added: “Hospitals indicate that there are 56 dead in a provisional toll.”
Prime Minister Amadou Ori Bah condemned “the incidents that distorted the match between the two teams of Lap and N’Zerekore,” in a post on Facebook.
