Chandigarh: Government employees were paid late this month as the Punjab government faced financial crisis.
Government employees are usually paid on the 1st. However, the salaries of the Punjab government employees for the month of August were not paid till September 5. As a result, rumors spread that the Punjab government was facing a financial crisis. Group C and D employees were paid on 6th evening. Others were paid yesterday.
Punjab officials said:
Ever since the Aam Aadmi government came to power in Punjab, government employees have been getting their salaries on time. For the first time this month the salary was delayed. There has been a financial crisis since the GST compensation ended last June.
In the last financial year, the Punjab government received Rs 16,000 crore as GST compensation from the central government. GST compensation was received only for the first quarter of this financial year. Now it has come to an end. The central government has not accepted the Punjab government’s request to continue the GST compensation.
Punjab government employees need Rs 2,597 crore for salary every month. Hence the delay. It may take upto 15th to pay salary next month. I don’t know how we are going to deal with this. Salaries of government employees and electricity subsidy are the two biggest burdens. During the election campaign, the Aam Aadmi Party government promised to provide 300 units of free electricity per month to every household. This is currently a huge burden on the Punjab government. This year the state needs Rs 20,000 crore for electricity subsidy. Till last December, Rs 1.298 crore of electricity bill arrears of customers was waived off and the same was borne by the state government. This move by the Aam Aadmi Party government has also started to have an impact on the financial position of the state. This was said by Punjab officials.
