Kuwait City: In the first quarter of 2021, 67,809 people returned home from work in Kuwait. This includes 17,398 domestic workers. According to a new Labor Market report, 21,341 Indians returned home from work in Kuwait between January and March this year. Of these, 10,169 are domestic workers. 6,136 Bangladeshis and 2,543 Filipinos have lost their jobs in Kuwait. As on March 31, the country’s labor market had 1,536,033 employees in the private sector. 411,464 in the government sector.
It is estimated that more than two lakh people have left the labor market in Kuwait since March 2020, when the Kovid expansion began. The main reason for this is that many businesses and industries have closed down and workers have lost their jobs following the lockdown following the Kovid expansion. Many continued to work but had not been paid for months. They returned home after years of exile as they could no longer hold on to it.
Along with the crisis created by Kovid, the repatriation implemented by the Ministry of Labor also led to the loss of thousands of jobs, including those of Indians. The government’s decision not to renew visas for those over 60 who do not have a university degree also backfired on expatriates. More than 42,000 expatriates have returned home after more than 40 years of exile without being able to renew their visas. Later, the decision to renew the visa on payment of 2,000 dinars was reversed, but to no avail.
