Doha: A Qatari court has sentenced 8 former Indian Navy officers to death in espionage cases. The Government of India has expressed its shock and displeasure at this verdict.
Eight ex-Indian Navy officers were working at Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services in Qatar. The institute also provides training and related services to the armed forces. All eight of them were accused of spying by providing information about the Qatari submarine to Israel.
In August last year, Qatar’s intelligence agency arrested 8 former Indian Navy officers on suspicion of spying for Israel. All eight accused Indians have been in solitary confinement since August last year. The case related to this was heard in the Qatar court today. The court heard the case and ordered the death penalty for 8 former Indian Navy officers who served in Qatar.
The Government of India has expressed its displeasure with this verdict. In a press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs of India in this regard, “This verdict is very shocking. We are waiting for the detailed verdict. We are in touch with the family members and lawyers of the 8 people. Also, we are exploring all legal avenues. We are in talks with the Qatari authorities. We are in this case. It is said that the Qatari authorities have electronic sources related to this.
