An amateur boxer died at the age of 24 after collapsing after winning a match in a regional tournament in the eastern German city of Gastro, his club announced on Thursday.
FC Bentwich said in statements to the German news agency (dpa) that the boxer underwent resuscitation after the match on Saturday, but he died a few days later in the hospital.
The club stated on its Facebook account: “In the state championship in Gastro, our boxer Richard collapsed after winning his match.”
He added: “After terrifying moments, hours and days, we regret to say that Richard lost his battle, and we are still in a state of deep sadness, pain, and lack of understanding of the situation.”
The daily newspaper “Ossetsee Zeitung” said that the cause of the boxer’s death was unclear, and according to the coach’s statements, the late boxer did not receive strong blows.
