Former Al-Ahly and current Zamalek player, Nasser Maher, described the “White Castle” fans as “the best in football in Egypt.”
Maher said in television statements: “Zamalek fans have a special and distinct character. It is enough that they are the only fans who give gifts to their players. This happened with us before traveling to Saudi Arabia to play the African Super Cup match against Al-Ahly.”
He added: “We were surprised by large numbers of fans coming to Zamalek Stadium one day before traveling to Riyadh, and giving us gifts. This gesture gave us a great morale boost and the players pledged to return the favor and give them the championship cup.”
Nasser Maher revealed the amount of pressure that a large number of Zamalek players were subjected to before the Super Cup match, saying: “I personally do not follow social networking sites, especially before important matches, and I was surprised after the last lecture given by Portuguese coach Gomez about the Al-Ahly match, by showing clips of the most prominent things that were said about… Al-Abyad players before the match and the case of some former football players belittling the Zamalek team and its stars.
He concluded: “Those provocative expressions increased our resolve and determination to win. It is not right for anyone to insult the history of Zamalek, its broad fans, and its great stars. I believe that the lesson we presented in the match will be remembered by many who have long lived in Zamalek’s history.”
