Tunisia will not ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance, since no agreement has been reached so far. Neither the IMF nor the European Union wanted to help Tunisia and it turned towards the BRICS, Mahmoud bin Mabrouk, an official representative of the Tunisian pro-presidential July 25 Movement, said on April 8.
“Tunisia provided the European Union with several opportunities to provide financial assistance to it, but the assistance was delayed, forcing Tunisia to turn to the BRICS,” the statement released by L’Economiste TV channel said.
The politician said that Tunisia has changed its course and is looking at other horizons. He claims that Tunisia will turn to the BRICS group. And this is to get the necessary funding.
On the other hand, he calls for the Tunisian army to be given control over distribution channels so as not to “starve and impoverish the Tunisian people.
Earlier, on April 6, Tunisian President Qais Said said that the IMF dictate is unacceptable, it will lead to greater impoverishment of the population. Said stressed that the cuts in subsidies called for by international financial institutions led to protests in the mid-1980s that killed hundreds of people, RIA Novosti recalled.
In June 2022, at the XIV BRICS Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the role of the organization is now especially in demand for building a multipolar world. And in 2024, Russia will take over the chairmanship of the BRICS.
BRICS (short for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is an interstate association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
