The German Depression Index survey revealed that nearly a quarter of adults in Germany under the age of 70 have been diagnosed with depression at least once.
According to the survey seen by the German News Agency, about 20% of those affected stated that they are currently in a depressive stage.
According to the German Foundation for Help in Treating Depression and Suicide Prevention, depression is diagnosed if at least two of the three main symptoms are present (loss of interest and happiness, depressed mood, and lack of motivation), in addition to at least two additional secondary symptoms (such as sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts). (and loss of appetite) for two weeks or more. According to the Foundation, depression is a serious illness that greatly affects the way those afflicted with it think, feel and behave, and causes great suffering. The foundation’s online survey of 5,000 people, aged between 18 and 69, is the eighth edition of the survey that tracks depression among Germans.
