The opening of the Polish-Spanish rivalry was between Hubert Hurkacz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In the past, the Pole had already competed with this opponent several times and these clashes were not the easiest ones. Their last match at Wimbledon in 2022 ended with the Spaniard winning after a super tie-break in the fifth set. Now the Wroclaw native was aiming for a successful rematch, which would bring Poland much closer to advancing from the group.
Great first set, then a break. Hubert Hurkacz treated the fans to a rollercoaster
The beginning of the match was dominated by the servers. Both players held their passes confidently and did not pose much of a threat. The situation changed in the eighth game, when Hubert Hurkacz played a great return game and “pressed” his opponent. The Pole received two break points and managed to use the second one. Later, the Pole had his own service at his disposal, which he used to great effect finished the set with a 6-3 victory.
At the beginning of the second game, the Wrocław player made a break point in the opening game, but this time the Spaniard managed to escape the difficult situation. The next two games were played without much story. Unexpectedly, in the fourth game, Hurkacz lost his own serve for the first time in this match. The Spaniard took advantage of the Pole’s weaker moment and a moment later broke the Wrocław player again. It was 5-1 and the opponent served for the deciding set. Hurkacz was still able to make up for some of the losses, but ultimately the opponent won the game 6:3.
In the decisive set, the first break point occurred only in the fifth game. The Spaniard received his opportunity to break through. However, Hubert managed to get out of trouble and after a while he was leading 3:2. What Alejandro failed to achieve in the fifth game came in the seventh – Lacosta. Davidovich Fokina received two more break opportunities and this time he managed to take advantage of one of them thanks to an excellent backhand after the cross.
The fired-up Spaniard persevered until the very end. Although he did not manage to end the match with the score at 5:3 and the Wrocław player’s serve, he later finished the match with his serve without any major problems. Ultimately Davidovich Fokina defeated our representative 6:3, 3:6, 4:6.
