The director of the Fujairah Martial Arts Club, Nader Abu Shawish, said that the participation of the national taekwondo team in the virtual world championship, which was held in Singapore last week, is “important and positive,” despite the absence of medals that the team was deprived of due to the tournament system, as he put it.
More than 580 male and female players from various countries of the world participated in the tournament, and the team was represented by seven players, all from the Fujairah Martial Arts Club, namely: Ahmed Hamid, Ahmed Al Abdouli, Mohammed Ahmed, Mohammed Al Dhanhani, Salma Rashid, Sheikha Rashid, and Shamma Hassan, along with coach Saif Al-Din Al-Trabelsi, and the club director. Nader Abu Shawish.
Abu Shawish told Emirates Today: “The UAE’s participation was positive and good, and although the team did not win medals, it played its matches strongly, and most of its players achieved advanced positions from fourth to tenth, reaping many positives in preparation for participation in the electronic sports tournament.” Which will be held at the end of next year in Saudi Arabia.
He continued: “We were close to winning more than one bronze medal, had it not been for the tournament system that awards the medal to the third-place finisher, while it is also awarded in regular tournaments to the fourth-place finisher,” stressing that the preparations that preceded participation in the World Cup led the players to perform at exceptional levels.
