Chennai: After 20 years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian team for the World Cup, which did not include any Tamil players.
The Cricket World Cup 2023 series will be held from October 5 to November 19 across 10 cities in India. India will host the series. India, reigning champion England, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Netherlands are participating in the tournament.
BCCI announced the squad for this series yesterday. None of the Tamil Nadu players were given a chance in this. Similarly, during the last 2003 World Cup series, BCCI announced the Indian team which did not include Tamil Nadu players under the leadership of Gangul. After that, Tamil Nadu players were included in the Indian team for the 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup series. Fans have been insisting that veteran off-spinner Ashwin should be given a chance in the upcoming World Cup series.
In the 2007 World Cup series, Dinesh Karthik was a wicketkeeper in the Indian team led by Rahul Dravid. Ashwin played in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup series. Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar were part of the Kohli-led squad in the 2019 World Cup series.
Indian Team Announcement: Earlier, BCCI announced the 15-member Indian cricket team for the Cricket World Cup series yesterday. The team selection is based on 7 batsmen, 4 all-rounders and 4 bowlers. Young batsman Tilak Verma, fast bowler Prasith Krishna and leg-spinner Yuvendra Chahal were not selected.
The ICC 50 Over Cricket World Cup will begin on October 5 in India. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav are in the batsmen line-up. Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel are the all-rounders.
Another main spinner is Kuldeep Yadav. Due to this, leg-spinner Yuvendra Chahal did not get a chance. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj are the fast bowlers. Young batsman Tilak Verma, wicket keeper Sanju Samson and fast bowler Prasith Krishna were not selected. The ICC has informed that teams can make last-minute changes by September 28 if any of the announced players are injured.
