The new Argentine coach of the Syrian national football team, Hector Cuper, expressed Thursday in Damascus his desire to “make the Syrian people happy after the difficult moments they experienced as a result of the earthquake.”
A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, killing nearly 6,000 people, in an indefinite toll.
In a press conference, which is his first since his appointment as coach of the Syrian national team in early February, Cuper demanded that everyone be patient and give the new technical staff ” time to work.”
Regarding the criteria for selecting the initial list of the national team players, he said that they are within specific conditions, “that the player has the motivation, spirit, will and desire to represent the national team to make his people and family happy.”
He added, “I watched a large number of the Syrian national team’s matches in the last three years, and began to analyze in depth the difficulties facing the national team, such as strengths and individual skills. In the current period, the greatest focus will be on getting to know the players better and getting close to them to develop their skills.”
Cuper stressed that the door “is always open for any player of Syrian nationality who has the opportunity for you to join the national team.”
Cooper’s list included 5 local players, Ibrahim Alama, Ahmed Madaniyeh, Thaer Kroma, Saad Ahmed and Amr Jenyat, and 20 players active in Arab and foreign clubs, led by Omar Al-Soma (Al-Arabi Qatari), Omar Kharbin (Shabab Al-Ahly of the Emirates) and Mahmoud Mawas (Iraqi Police).
The rest of the list included Maxim Sarraf, Amr Midani, Abdullah Al-Shami, Fares Arnaout, Khaled Kurdaghli, Abdul Rahman Weis, Fahd Al-Youssef, Kamel Hamisha, Simon Amin, Oliver Casco, Muhammad Anz, Muhammad Rihaniyya, Mulham Babouli, Ammar Ramadan, Muhammad Marmur, Muhammad Hallaq and Muhammad Othman.
