New Delhi. The government has announced the appointment of the new Air Force Chief. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh will take over as the new Air Force Chief of the country on 30 September. It is worth noting that the current Air Chief VR Choudhary is retiring on 30 September itself. Air Marshal Singh is a fighter pilot.
Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh was commissioned in the Air Force in 1984. He has held many important positions. Apart from Vice Air Chief, he has also been Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command. The government has kept seniority in mind in the appointment of the new Air Force Chief. Before becoming Vice Air Chief in February last year, Singh has held many important responsibilities.
Air Marshal Singh has experience of flying various types of fighter aircraft and helicopters. During his career, he has commanded an operational fighter squadron and a frontline air base. As a test pilot, he has led the MiG-29 fighter upgrade project management team that went to Moscow. Apart from this, he has been the project director (flight test) of the indigenous fighter aircraft Tejas.
It is worth noting that in recent times, there has been a lot of tension between China and India from Arunachal to Ladakh. Indian fighter planes have been deployed near Arunachal. Singh is taking command at a time when the Indian Air Force is continuously undergoing its modernization at a rapid pace. Air Marshal Singh has been awarded the ‘Ati Vishisht Seva Medal’ for his exceptional work. The President honored him on Republic Day in 2019.
