The vast majority of US residents believe that action must be taken to eradicate the increasingly recurring acts of shooting in the country. However, Americans disagree about methods that can help with this. The corresponding survey was conducted on Sunday, June 5, at the request of the CBS television channel.
Opinions were divided on the issue of limiting the spread of firearms.
Thus, 72% of supporters of the ruling Democratic Party believe that restrictions are necessary to ensure security in the country. In the Republican Party, on the contrary, only 16% of respondents adhere to this opinion, and 46% believe that an increase in the number of gun owners will lead to a decrease in the threat.
72% of respondents agree that the problem can be solved. At the same time, Democrats are confident that the threat of violence can be reduced through more serious checks on buyers of firearms (74%), a ban on semi-automatic rifles (72%) and the introduction of laws that allow police to seize weapons from those who are recognized by the court as a threat to themselves and others (70% ).
Republicans believe that effective measures will be: effective detection and treatment of mental illness (60%), increasing the number of police and armed guards (59%) and increasing the role of religion in society (54%).
28% of respondents are confident that the problem of violence in the United States should be reconciled, as it is the cost of a “free society”.
Since the beginning of 2022, more than 200 mass shootings have taken place in the United States, each involving at least four people, according to the Washington Post.
On June 3, it became known that US President Joe Biden, in connection with the increasing cases of mass executions in the country, announced the need to tighten control over the circulation of weapons in opposition to the second amendment of the American constitution. In response, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa said that it was the worst speech by an American leader. According to party supporters, Biden questioned the importance of the second amendment.
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right of US citizens to keep and bear arms. At the same time, the country has recently seen a trend towards a loss of control over arms flows: according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in 2021 alone, the rate of shooting incidents in the United States was marked by an increase of 52.5%. At the legislative level, Washington is trying to solve the problem.
While US lawmakers are working to resolve the situation, shooting-related incidents are being massively recorded in the US. In one Wednesday, June 1, shootings took place in the country in three states at once: for example, in the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, as a result of which at least four people were killed. Prior to that, at a school prom in New Orleans, three people were injured by shooting. Even earlier, on May 29, one person became a victim of a shooter at a festival in Oklahoma, and seven more were injured.
