The balloon, which is the size of three buses, is flying higher than airplanes, the Pentagon said. The US said that it has brought this matter to China’s attention. In this context, Foreign Minister Antony Blinken, who was supposed to leave for China in a few hours, postponed his trip halfway. While the tensions between the two countries are already continuing, the situation is likely to worsen. The US has been keeping a close eye on the balloon for a few days as it flew over security-sensitive bases.
Blinken spoke on the phone with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the same topic. Wang said they had a calm and professional discussion about the incident. “China is a responsible country. It always abides by international laws. We do not accept any baseless speculations and hypes. Let’s avoid false reports and resolve differences,” China’s official newspaper Junhua said.
China has clarified that the balloon was a ‘civilian spacecraft’ and was launched by them for meteorological research. In addition to the effects of winds, it explained that due to limited self-propelled capability, it changed direction and entered US airspace by mistake. China expressed regret over the incident. But America was not satisfied with this response. It is noteworthy that the appearance of the second balloon comes at a time when the superpower is grasping for a more comprehensive explanation.
The United States was alerted as this balloon was in the airspace of Montana, where the nuclear missile launch site is located. Sources in the Defense Department said that the officials abandoned the idea as there was a possibility that the fragments would fall on people if they were attacked and demolished.
