In recent months there has been talk in Mexico that Tesla will invest in the construction of a plant with a millionaire investment that would amount to about $10,000 million dollarss.
Neither Elon Musk nor his company have made any official announcement, but it is true that staff from Tesla has met with people from Governor Samuel García, from Nuevo Leónand with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard in initial talks.
There is a confidentiality agreement and the issues that have been discussed cannot be anticipated, but the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), is already celebrating Tesla’s decision to invest in the construction of a plant, confirming the automaker’s plans to settle in Mexico.
The news in the country has excited different states because it is a great investment and Mexico has a significant production of car manufacturers, so there is talk of Nuevo León, Hidalgo, Michoacán and Guanajuato as places with possibilities of receiving Tesla.
However, AMLO is ruling out Nuevo León as a possible suitable place for the new gigafactory.
“There are already places in the country where there is not enough water and we have to take care of the water for domestic consumption and one of the states that has problems of lack of water is Nuevo León“, said the president to the media.
For AMLO, the new project must be located “where there is water where there are services. There has to be a national planning, the needs of the people have to be taken into account first, water for the people”.
Obviously the final decision on where to build should be Tesla’s.but López Obrador has already put on the table an issue that could play against Nuevo León: the scarcity of water.
“We have to look for options, alternatives. . . Yes, there are very favorable conditions in Nuevo León, they have qualified labor, they have technicians, it is very close to the border, but what about the lack of water? “I’m going to talk to the managers”.
The issue is not minor because AMLO has influenced so that beer is not produced in the North of Mexico, due to the lack of waterreason why it is directing the investments to the south, where there is no lack of the vital liquid.
Almost three years ago, to protect Baja California’s water, AMLO stopped the construction of a brewery of the multinational Constellation Brands in Mexicali.
The president stressed that through a consultation, the citizens decided that the brewery would not operate in their municipality because there is not enough water supply and that determination stopped the investment.
Given these arguments, the balance seems to lean towards Hidalgo, where the arrival of Tesla could benefit the recently built Felipe Ángeles airport, a representative work of the obradorista administration, which is looking for ways to take people who travel and justify its construction, because so far their activities are almost nil and the place is most of the time empty and inactive.
