Logroño, Jun 16 (EFE).- Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in people’s lives and, along with “positive” uses, there are also others that give rise to the commission of crimes, something that puts It shows that it is necessary to “talk, have a conversation” in society about the use that is made of this technology and the limits that are placed on it.
This was considered this Friday by the legal attaché of the FBI at the United States Embassy in Spain, Abelardo M. Vecino, in an appearance before the media prior to his intervention in the summer course organized by the Civil Guard in Logroño , where he has analyzed the impact of AI in different fields.
It has affected the nature of “allies” that Spain and the United States have, which entails sharing some information, in this case about the development of AI because “we have shared values and security is one of them, it is one of the pillars of our relationship”.
He has also assumed that there is “fear” in society of AI, but he believes that “this situation must be seen as an opportunity to learn, to be able to understand a little how technology affects us on a day-to-day basis”.
The misuse of AI, on the other hand, “is just another manifestation of threats that we have lived with for many years, such as organized crime, cybercrime or terrorism”, which “now use those tools and applications “, has explained.
He has recognized that “the bad guys are always ahead” in the application of technology and, “for this reason, we have to have those same tools and applications so that the citizen feels safe and can maintain order.”
IT DOES NOT DECIDE THE AI
This expert has stressed that AI is advancing, in the field of security, in facial recognition and DNA analysis applications, among others, “but we are always limited in resources and we aim to be efficient to minimize the cost ”.
But beyond technological development, “you have to have a conversation” in society about issues surrounding AI, for example privacy, because “you have to understand what are the pros and cons of technology, the good things that contributes and also the challenges that must be faced”, given that “we are facing a new technology that evolves rapidly”.
Within that “debate” that he claims, “it is also necessary to contribute the use that the bad guys (criminals) are making of the AI, the citizen must know it.”
In addition, he stated, “we must ensure that the data we use to make decisions is appropriate because it will be a human being who makes the final decisions” and “it is important that citizens know that, that the AI does not decide”.
On the other hand, he has referred to the fact that both this “debate” and the legislation on the use of AI are part of the environment of Western countries and do not affect others, such as China.
“The United States and Spain are two allied nations that fight for the right of the human being and for peace” and “that is why we are concerned about how the data is used and we work every day to ensure that it is done for the purposes that we, two friendly countries, seek “, it is finished.
