MumbaiKolkata-based actress Anasuiya Sengupta has won the Best Actress award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Anasuiya Sengupta received this award in the Un Certain Regard segment for her performance in the film ‘The Shameless’. With this, she has become the first Indian actress in the history of Cannes Film Festival to be awarded this award.
Anasuiya Sengupta has dedicated this award to the gay community and other marginalized communities around the world. The actress said on stage that all these communities are bravely fighting a battle that they should not have to fight. They have to fight to get equal rights in society. ‘The Shameless’ is directed by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bozanov.
Its story is woven around two sex workers, one of whom kills a policeman. Apart from Anasuiya Sengupta, actress Omara Shetty is also seen in an important role in this film. This film also got a nomination in the same category in which Anasuiya Sengupta won this award. However, the film could not win this award.
Anasuiya Sengupta was chosen as the best actress in the Un Certain Regard segment of the Cannes Film Festival. After winning the award, Anasuiya Sengupta said, “You don’t need to be gay to fight for equality for all. We just need to be very, very decent human beings.” Along with this, she also thanked her fans on Instagram for this victory.
