Ceci Flores, leader of the Searching Mothers of Sonora collective, attributes the murders of women dedicated to the search for missing people to organized crime. She has called for the attacks to stop.
A new case against women dedicated to searching for people. Now in Baja California, where Angelita Almeraz León, president of the collective “Unión y Fuerza por Nuestros Desaparecidos,” was murdered.
Angelita Almeraz was looking for her brother who disappeared in 2018
According to reports, Angelita Almeraz (misidentified as “Angelita Meraz” in some media) was murdered in her business, located in Tecate. Around 2:00 p.m. yesterday, February 8, an armed individual entered his salon and opened fire on him, then fled in a black Audi car.
“Today our friend, sister Angelita Almeraz León, was taken from us in the most cruel way (…) he was always in front of us defending us and fighting for our rights when looking for our loved ones,” stated the statement from the group led by the woman, Union Y Fuerza Por Nuestros Desaparecidos Tecate BC.
Until now, the authorities of Baja California have limited themselves to what they always do: condemn the events and promise that they will carry out the investigations to clarify the facts to the final consequences.
“In Baja California, those who attack a woman pay the consequences in court,” warned the head of the Baja California Attorney General’s Office, Elena Andrade Ramírez, cited by Political Animal.
The government “is overwhelmed,” he said when complaining about the lack of personnel to deal with disappearances.
To date, the identity of Angelita Almeraz’s attacker is unknown, as is the motive for the attack against her. For now, it has not been indicated whether the president of “Unión y Fuerza por Nuestros Desaparecidos” received threats before the attack.
What we have as a reference is that, a few days ago, Angelita Meraz complained about the lack of support to deal with cases of missing people. In a broadcast made on Facebook, on January 27, rHe accused the authorities of Baja California of not having carried out the removal of a body found on a hill.which corresponded to a person with a missing person file from the State Prosecutor’s Office.
“Organized crime, the search for people, the location, the findings, the genetic tests, it is too much, it is exceeded”Angelita commented, mentioning that one of the main problems is the lack of personnel (they had not responded to her call, since before they had to attend to four other cases).
The murder of Angelita Meraz occurs a few days after, in Guanajuato, Lorenza Cano, a member of “Salamanca Unidos Searching for Disappeared”, was kidnapped from her home.
So far, the authorities have not found her whereabouts and recently released two people who had been linked to the kidnapping, as well as the murders of Lorenza’s son and husband. Like Angelita Almeraz, Lorenza Cano joined a search group after the disappearance of her brother.
