ANR was born on September 20, 1924 in Krishna district to Venkataratnam and Punnamma. In 1941, he first appeared in a small role in the film ‘Dharmapatni’ directed by C Pullaiah. Two years later, Ghantasala Balaramaiah was given a chance to play the hero for the first time in ‘Sitaramajananam’. After that, Nageswara Rao got his first time break after giving a hit again with Ghantasalane ‘Balaraju’. The way he took every opportunity that came his way and climbed one step at a time to become a legendary actor is an example for many.
ANR, who showed his talent in folk films like ‘Keelugurram’, has scored consecutive successes with films like ‘Laila Majnu, Palleturi Pilla, Mayalamari’. At the same time Nandamuri Taraka faced a competition with Rama Rao and got into a bit of thinking. He realized his strengths and focused more on the films he liked. If NTR gets a grip on mythology like this… Akkineni has jumped into social and romantic films. In the same sequence, both acted together in 14 multi-starrers. In it mainly ‘Missamma, Gundamma Katha, Tenali Ramakrishna, Srikrishnarjuna Yuddha’ are found.
It can be said that ANR’s performance in the film ‘Devadasu’ as a broken hearted lover who failed in love in the early days of his career is unremarkable. No matter how many people took ‘Devadasu’ after that, no one could impress him at the level of ANR. That is his greatness. ANR opened a new chapter on the silver screen not only with acting but also with dances. As smart as he was in the roles of a smart boy, he also moved the audience with his tragic roles. The films ‘Moogamanasulu, Doctor Chakraborty, Premanagar, Premabhishekam’ are examples of that. After that, ANR’s performance as an elderly writer who adores actress Jayapradha in the movie ‘Megha Sandesham’ will never be forgotten.
A small example of his stamina is the performance of the film ‘Premabhishekam’ in which he played ANR’s lover at the age of sixty. After that, he won the hearts of the audience with films like ‘Sitaramayya Gari Manavaralu’ with the young generation. He dedicated his life to the film industry as long as he had breath. Despite knowing that he would die in a few days, Akkineni finally acted in the movie ‘Manam’ along with three generations of heroes and remained immortal in everyone’s hearts.
And as a measure of his talent, he received the awards of Raghupathi Venkaiah, Dadasaheb Phalke, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Akkineni passed away on January 22, 2014. Today, let’s remember him on his death anniversary.
