More than 3,000 technologists from around the world gathered last week in Barcelona for HPE Discover 2023, an event where Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) reaffirmed its commitment to artificial intelligence. The American company also renewed its strategic commitment to value-added services in the cloud, the promotion of private 5G networks and its efforts to accompany customers in the new challenges of digitalization. In this context, Antonio Neri, president and CEO of HPE, gave an interview to elEconomista.es in which he recommended that companies act with “boldness and caution” in the use and adoption of artificial intelligence in their organizations.
What can we learn from ‘Discover 2023’?
The protagonist of this Discover 2023 has been artificial intelligence, from which we can expect a tremendous economic boom. It is difficult to calculate its impact in the next five years, but we can estimate it at 1.6 trillion American dollars, which in exchange is equivalent to 1.5 trillion euros. Without a doubt, new opportunities will arise for countries and companies. For this reason, it is important to value the technological aspect of AI, but much more relevant will be its economic scope.
The path of AI is presumed to be complicated, what edges can we find?
The problem will be how to implement it. There will be a period of adaptation and education, to understand and deploy it. But the power of the phenomenon is there. In fact, advances are daily: Chat GPT3 was born a year ago with 50 billion parameters and now Chat GPT5 already includes more than a trillion parameters.
What phase is AI in?
I think we have reached the tipping point, as AI is more like a human brain than a prediction calculator capable of delivering a result.
A visionary like you may dare to describe what AI will be like in two or three years.
Thank you so much. I think AI will be included at all levels of business processes. I can see that. For example, there are people who already use artificial intelligence to create legal documents within the company. Others use them for digital marketing, which has taken a huge leap in the last decade. Also in healthcare. In that case, AI helps doctors simplify processes. By eliminating the 90% of risk-free files, healthcare professionals can focus on the 10% that pose problems.
When will we appreciate the advantages of integrating AI with hybrid clouds, with specific services for each sector?
Right now. Hybrid clouds already exist working with AI in verticals. There are some for administrations, also for financial institutions and others for entertainment. New process models can be created. I usually say that, until now, there were two worlds: the native cloud and what we call hybrid cloud, and now native AI is incorporated. Our job is to integrate all of the above and we do it in our Green Lake, because the data will be perfectly controlled in the field, not just in the cloud.
Where are those ‘GreenLakes’?
HPE GreenLake has 17 clusters around the world. Our interest is in being where our customers are.
What message would you give to companies that still doubt the potential of artificial intelligence?
The future belongs to the past and everything happens very quickly. In this way, I recommend companies to be cautious and bold at the same time. They must know the technology and quickly learn to use it, without waiting for someone to come along to solve all the problems, because in that case it would be too late. Look at what happened during Covid. The companies were very brave to digitize their processes, to use ecommerce and were able to grow a lot in a short time. Now, however, they face another problem: if they do not move forward, they will end up destroying themselves. Therefore, companies must control their destiny and protect themselves so that no one harms them. It is more of a cultural than technological issue.
HPE itself is an example of transformation…
Definitely. We have gone from selling servers to selling GreenLake, AI, data systems, supercomputing, neurological computing…, but first of all we had to transform the company culture. Then we just needed to dictate what type of technological architecture we have to use.
Apart from the fact that ‘Discover’ has chosen Barcelona this year, what importance does your organization give to the Spanish market?
A lot. In Spain, it is not only a market where we can sell, but also where we can innovate. And that’s what we do. In fact, we have centers of excellence in Spain for certain jobs. We see in Spain a strong presence of our telecommunications, software and banking clients. We have helped many large Spanish entities around the world and we see with satisfaction how the large Spanish banks are transforming with open systems. And many have done it with us.
Do you have any upcoming investments planned in Spain?
We always value it from a general approach. From my point of view, Spain is well covered at the moment. But clearly we are working with Spanish universities. We are interested in knowing where to have talent. In the field of telecommunications, we are now especially happy about the development of 5G in Spain.
How do you describe your commitment to private 5G?
The future of private 5G networks is very important. In fact, we have many conversations in Spain with large operators to whom we provide private 5G network technology. I insist, we have very good business relations in Spain.
