Digital Desk, Copenhagen. With a record 23,228 new cases of COVID-19 in Denmark in the past 24 hours, health officials are urging citizens to visit as little as possible during the holiday season. Reported cases accounted for 1,205 infections, or one in every 20, according to Statens Serum Institute (SSI) data on Wednesday.
With only one day left for New Year’s Eve, Denmark’s health authority (SST) director Soren Brostrom urged Danes to celebrate the 31st in peace, Xinhua news agency reported. Brostrom told a news conference to meet as few people as possible and stay at home.
The SSI also recorded 16 new deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the national tally to 3,247 deaths and 762,299 cases since the pandemic began. According to Tyra Grove Krause, academic director of SSI, the omicron variant has been identified in 80 percent of positive samples.
At the press conference, Krauss said that Omicron could peak in January 2022. Additionally, the SSI reports that 77.6 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated, and 45.7 percent received a booster shot.
