New Delhi: Communist Party of India (CPI) National Secretary Pinoy Viswam has condemned the renaming of the Mughal Garden at the President’s House as “Amrit Udyan”. He also said that this decision to try to destroy the memories of the Mughal era is arbitrary and unfortunate.
In this regard, Binay Viswam, a senior leader of the Communist Party, has also written a letter to the President. In that letter, he said, “Such names of places depict the histories of certain periods of our history. The Mughal era is an indelible one in Indian history. As a great empire, it cannot be denied that the Mughal kings had both good and bad sides. This fact also applies to Hindu kings.
Erasing the word “Mughal” from history can be seen as rewriting Indian history and redefining nationhood. With this name change we have lost a very important part of the history of Delhi. It is unfortunate that people in high positions like you support such communal activities.
Therefore, the decision to change the name should be reconsidered. The history teachers and researchers should be consulted regarding this issue,” he said.
Last Saturday, President Draupadi Murmu renamed 6 gardens including the Mughal Garden at the President’s official residence as Amrit Udyan. It is being carried out as part of the Amrit Kaala celebrations to mark the 75th year of India’s independence.
The “Mughal Garden” which has been renamed as Amrit Udyan, a symbol of the President’s House, is spread over 15 acres.
It is to be noted that earlier, the Central Government had named the Raja Path in the national capital as Duty Path, Race Course Road as Lok Kalyan Marg and Aurangzeb Road in the India Gate hexagonal triangle after former President Abdul Kalam.
