New Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been in custody since March 21 in the excise policy case, has now approached the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest. Apart from this, he has also filed a regular bail petition for his early release.
Let us tell you that Kejriwal has challenged his arrest and remand orders and has sought bail. Apart from this, he has criticized the August 5 decision of the Delhi High Court. In which it was said that Kejriwal’s arrest was neither illegal nor without any reasonable basis because the CBI had presented “sufficient evidence” to justify his custody and remand.
Let us tell you that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was taken into custody by the ED on March 21, but in May the Supreme Court granted him interim bail for 21 days for the Lok Sabha election campaign. Then on July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the ED case, acknowledging that he had spent more than 90 days in jail.
The petition was filed two days after the Supreme Court granted bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case. While releasing Sisodia on bail on August 9, the Supreme Court had said that 17 months of long imprisonment and his continued detention in a case in which there is no hope of the trial ending soon violates Sisodia’s fundamental right to liberty and speedy trial under Article 21 of the Constitution.
