The United States supported allowing the athletes of Russia and Belarus to participate as neutrals in the 2024 Paris Olympics, while opposing the raising of the flags of the two countries and their national emblems against the background of the invasion of Ukraine, according to what the White House announced yesterday.

White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre told reporters that “the United States supported the suspension of the membership of the Russian and Belarusian sports federations in international sports federations,” but if athletes are invited to an international event such as the Olympic Games, “it must be very clear that they do not represent the countries of Russia or Belarus”.

And she stressed that “the use of the official flags, emblems and anthems of the countries of Russia and Belarus must also be prohibited.”
