Ashes 2023: Pat Cummins equals record of 1930
As part of the Ashes series, the host England team got the upper hand in the first Test being held at Edgbaston. Australia’s lower order failed to give England a slim lead of seven runs. The Aussies, who started the third day with an overnight score of 311 for the loss of five wickets, were bowled out for 386 runs. England bowlers cut the tail of kangaroos with short ball strategy. Alex Carey turned away from the bowling of Anderson shortly after the start of play. Carey, who started the day with 52 runs, added 14 more runs and was bowled at 66 runs. But with Aussie captain Pat Cummins’ counter attack, Australia had chances to take the lead. But under these circumstances, Usman Khawaja, who played the worst shot in the bowling of Robin Sun, scored 144 runs and turned back. When Khawaja was out for 372 runs, the Aussie innings ended with just 14 more runs. However, in the first innings of the Aussies, Pat Cummins scored 38 runs off 62 balls. Cummins also had three sixes in his innings. Cummins equaled a record set in 1930 by hitting three sixes. Cummins equaled former England captain Percy Champmann’s record for most sixes in an innings in an Ashes series. Champ Mann hit three sixes in the 1930 Test at Lord’s. Cummins has now equaled that record.
In the first innings, the host England got a lead of seven runs, so now both the teams have equal chances to win the match. With two and a half days left for the game, it will be interesting to see whether the English batsmen will play aggressively like the first innings.
