After shelling by the armed formations of Ukraine (VFU) of the premises of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), the enterprise fears a failure in the operation of the power system, since the HPP is directly related to the correct operation of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZAES), Izvestia correspondent Ivan Litomin said on Saturday, August 13 .
“The consequences of a strike on the engine room of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station – glass was knocked out here, fragments fell into the oil tank. Two turbines had to be urgently stopped. There were prerequisites for a fire. Now the hydroelectric power plant is operating in emergency mode. A couple more blows can simply incapacitate her, ”said the journalist.
After the VFU rocket attacks on the Kakhovskaya HPP, the management decided to turn off one of the station’s turbines. This is an emergency situation and the enterprise is operating in a dangerous mode, said Arseniy Zelensky, deputy director for reconstruction, acting director of the station.
“Of course, hostilities near the station are unacceptable. This is a strategic facility that threatens not only the lower reaches of the Dnieper, but also the upper reaches, since the water intakes of the Energodar nuclear power plant are directly fed from the Kakhovka reservoir,” he explained.
Zelensky specified that problems at the hydroelectric power station could directly affect the operation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. In the event of the destruction of the dam, there will be all the conditions for a nuclear catastrophe: if the nuclear power plant cannot take the right amount of water to cool the reactors, he added.
According to a Russian serviceman guarding the hydroelectric power station, the AFU are shelling the hydroelectric power station with foreign missiles.
“Strikes with foreign-made missiles are carried out with the help of guidance of foreign satellites to bypass the VFU, since they do not have such capabilities and systems that could guide these missiles so accurately. Debris from such a rocket was found at the site. They contain numbers and names of foreign production,” he showed a fragment of one of the missiles.
Earlier that day, after the shelling of the VFU of the Kakhovskaya HPP, the management decided to stop one turbine of the station. As the acting director of the station explained, at the moment there are three hydroelectric units in operation. Before the missiles and shrapnel hit, there were four in the area of the northern end.
On August 12, Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the military-civilian administration (MAC) of the Kherson region, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine again attacked Novaya Kakhovka, aiming at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. The shelling of the station was carried out from the American multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) HIMARS.
The Kherson region was liberated during a special operation to protect the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), which Moscow launched on February 24. It was preceded by an aggravation of the situation in the region, an appeal by the leadership of the Donbass republics to the Russian Federation with a request for help, and the subsequent recognition by Russia of the independence of the DPR and LPR.
Kyiv has been conducting a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état in Ukraine, since 2014.
