Bhubaneswar: India beat Spain 2-0 in their first match of the Men’s Hockey World Cup series.
The Men’s World Cup Hockey Series started yesterday in Odisha. India, the host of the 16-team series, faced off against Spain in their first match. In the 13th minute of the match, which was held at the newly constructed Birsa Munda Stadium at a cost of Rs 200 crores in Rourkela, the Indian team got a penalty corner opportunity.
Amit Rohitas converted this goal and the Indian team took a 1-0 lead. In the 26th minute, the Indian team scored the 2nd goal. Hardik dribbled the ball to the left and slotted it into the back of the net. As a result, the Indian team took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the game.
In the 32nd minute, Indian player Akashdeep was fouled inside Spain’s ‘D’ ring. As a result, a penalty stroke was awarded to the Indian team. In this, Harmanpreet’s shot towards the left side was blocked by Spanish goalkeeper Robbie before the ball touched the goal line. The Indian team appealed against this. But it didn’t work.
Manpreet wasted a penalty corner opportunity in the 37th minute and Harmanpreet wasted a penalty corner opportunity in the 43rd minute. In the 48th minute, Indian player Abhishek was suspended for 10 minutes for a foul. This forced the Indian team to play with 10 players. However, this time the Indian team was active in defence.

Argentina win: In the opening match held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Argentina and South Africa, who were placed in the ‘A’ category, clashed. Former Olympic champion Argentina won 1-0.
South Africa, ranked 14th in the world, failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes. Argentina came back strongly in the next 15 minutes. But the team could not convert all 3 penalty corners into goals.
South Africa missed a great chance to score early in the 2nd half with a penalty corner opportunity. At the same time, in the 42nd minute, Argentina started attacking. Casella Maico took a pass from Toscani and made a brilliant field goal. This gave Argentina a 1-0 lead.
In the final part of the game, South Africa attacked. But the South African team was unable to respond as the Argentina team was strong in defence. In the end, Argentina won 1-0.
Argentina’s next match is against world number one Australia on the 16th. South Africa will face France on the same day.
Aussie Gol rain….: Australia thrashed France 8-0 in the 2nd match at the Kalinga Stadium. Tom Craig scored field goals in the 8th, 31st and 44th minutes. Meanwhile, Jeremy Hayward converted 3 penalty corner opportunities in the space of 12 minutes. He scored these 3 goals in the 26th, 28th and 38th minutes. Ogilvy scored a field goal in the 27th minute and Wickham scored a field goal in the 54th minute.
Wales defeat…: In another ‘D’ match at the Birsa Munda Stadium, England and Wales clashed. In this, the England team won with the score of 5-0. Ansel scored two goals and Park, Raber and Bandurak scored one each.
