India had won the first match of this series played in Perth, but after that it lost in Adelaide and also had to face defeat in Brisbane. Team India breathed life into the series by drawing the Melbourne Test match and raised hopes that the series could be drawn, but this could not happen in Sydney and India lost.
Team India’s batsmen completely failed in the Sydney Test match. India collapsed for 185 runs in the first innings. Indian bowlers played brilliantly and bowled out Australia for 181 runs in their first innings. In the second innings, India came in with a lead of four runs, but after being bundled out for just 157 runs, they could only set an easy target for Australia.
Pant scored 61 runs in India’s second innings but no other batsman could get going. Team India ended the second day with 141 runs at the loss of six wickets in the second innings. A strong partnership was expected from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar which could not be fulfilled. Cummins gave the first blow to India on the third day by dismissing Jadeja. Jadeja could score only 13 runs. Cummins ended Sundar’s innings of 12 runs.
