After the long wait, electric share autos will start running in Kochi city from November 15. The Kochi Corporation has announced that Auto Savari (AuSa), an online autorickshaw ride hailing application, will be launched in the district on November 15. The project is being implemented by Ernakulam District Auto Drivers Cooperative Society and Kochi Corporation. As part of the project, 100 e-autorickshaws are planned to be put on the road. In the first phase, 30 e-autos will hit the roads on November 15, the day the project will start. In the first phase, e-autos will operate as a feeder service at metro stations within city limits.

Along with the new app, the corporation has launched a pilot project as part of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly modes of transport within the city. Soon, AusA app will be rolled out in Ernakulam. The e-autos will operate at rates set by the government. (Minimum fare is Rs. 30 and Rs. 12 as additional charge for every 1.5 km). Supported by German agency GIZ, the app is registered under the Ernakulam District Auto Drivers Cooperative Society. With the launch of e-autos, the tussle with online aggregators like Ola and Uber over commission charges will end.

The app will also link auto drivers’ bank accounts with the app and allow passengers to make payments to the driver’s account as an online payment at the end of the journey. At present there are at least four online ride hailing apps like Ola and Uber in Kochi. There are also Tukxi and Rapido which offer auto ride only.

A group of autorickshaw drivers say that complaints of drivers cheating passengers will no longer be a problem with the introduction of Ausa app. Passengers can also rely on drivers as they travel at government fixed rates.

120 drivers have been trained in Kila to drive e-autos. The drivers of these autos have a special uniform. E-autos are launched in a swap model where the batteries can be changed when the charge runs out. Swap stations have been set up at Thoppumpadi, near DH ground, Elamkulam, Lisi Junction and Mamangalam.

The autos will hit the road with financial support from UN Habitat and GIES. Discussions about e-autos started in 2017 as part of making Kochi an e-mobility hub. 60,000 will be given as a subsidy by the corporation to buy an autorickshaw. The rest of the amount will be raised through a loan from the cooperative.

The project is part of the government’s policy to promote electric vehicles. Now you can book an auto ride online from anywhere in the city through the app launched with the full support of the Auto Drivers Cooperative. The app allows passengers to book an auto for specific needs or for a whole day. Autos are equipped with GPS so the app will set things up including tracking. What’s more, passengers can know the location of vehicles, battery charge level and distance in meters through the app.
