Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov announced the termination of the diplomatic activity of the embassy of the republic in Iran. All employees of the diplomatic mission were evacuated from Tehran, Trend reports on January 29.
“We have completely suspended the diplomatic activities of the embassy. Five people remain there in connection with the protection of the administrative building and property of the embassy. They will not carry out any diplomatic activity, ”the deputy minister quoted the publication as saying.
He also added that Azerbaijani citizens who are in Iran will be able, if necessary, to seek assistance from the Consulate General in Tabriz, which will continue to work.
On the morning of January 27, the Tehran police said that a man with two children entered the building of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission and opened fire with a firearm. According to the latest data, one person died – it was the head of the embassy security, two more employees were injured. The attacker was arrested on the spot. He attributed his actions to personal motives and family problems.
On January 27, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital monstrous. He expressed condolences and wished recovery to the victims.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in turn, expressed condolences in connection with the incident and expressed the hope that all those responsible for this would be punished.
