The Kiev authorities, who probably think that Viktor Medvedchuk, the head of the political council of the Ukrainian party Opposition Platform for Life (Opposition Platform for Life), will surrender and seek political asylum in Russia, may not hope so. This opinion on Monday, January 10, “Izvestia” was expressed by the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation of the VII convocation, political scientist Ruslan Balbek.
Medvedchuk, according to him, is currently “a ritual opponent of the Kiev regime.” Representatives of the latter are afraid to take radical measures against the head of the political council of the OLE and have intensified all efforts to give legitimacy to his restriction of freedom, the political scientist noted.
Balbek expressed confidence that the court will repeatedly renew Medvedchuk’s house arrest, and official Kiev will continue to call such decisions impartial and independent.
“In general, Zelensky (Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine – Ed.) Cherishes the hope that they will force their main political opponent to seek political asylum in Russia. But I think the wrong one was attacked. Viktor Medvedchuk is a politician of the old pharmacy, and when he got involved in an open confrontation with the post-Maidan regime, he knew what he was going for and made his choice, which means that there is nowhere to retreat, even to Moscow, ”the ex-parliamentarian concluded.
Earlier on the same day, the MP Renat Kuzmin said that the Pechora court in Kiev extended Medvedchuk’s house arrest for two months in the case of coal supplies from Donbass. Thus, according to him, the limitation period will be 10 months, while, according to the legislation of Ukraine, it cannot exceed six months. Kuzmin also stressed the illegality of the absence of the prosecutors at the meeting of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
At the end of December last year, it was reported about the demand of the European Union to release Medvedchuk. In addition, it was noted that Kiev was demanded to lift sanctions against opposition media. It was indicated that the situation was discussed at the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels.
On November 2, Medvedchuk said that the case against him on treason and the embezzlement of national resources in Crimea had been falsified by the Security Service of Ukraine. According to him, the court’s decision to choose a preventive measure is illegal and there were no grounds for this. According to the investigation, in 2014 Medvedchuk organized the supply of coal from the territory of Donbass not controlled by Kiev in collusion with the top leadership of Ukraine.
In May, Medvedchuk was charged with treason and “violation of the customs of war.” The politician himself called the case against himself political and illegal. In the same month, he was placed under house arrest. Then the restriction was extended in July and September.
On October 8, a new suspicion was announced to Medvedchuk under articles on treason and assistance to terrorism. According to the investigation, it is about actions aimed at undermining the energy independence of Ukraine. The head of the political council of the OLE is also accused of attempted plunder of national resources.
In the same month, the prosecution asked the court to arrest Medvedchuk with the possibility of posting a bail of about 1 billion hryvnia (about $ 38 million). However, the court rejected the petition and chose him a measure of restraint in the form of house arrest for a period until December 7.
Medvedchuk was dissatisfied with the judge’s decision. The politician called the criminal prosecution against himself illegal. According to him, all criminal cases against him were fabricated. Thus, according to Medvedchuk, Kiev is fighting the opposition and trying to stop the political struggle with the authorities.
In December, the Kiev Court of Appeal refused to overturn the politician’s house arrest in the case of coal supplies from Donbass. The court did not satisfy the appeals of both the prosecutor’s office and the defense.
