A woman named Madhavi Dutta of DLF Phase 5 received a message on January 21. Dear user your HDFC account is closing today. Click on this link and enter your PAN card number. Seeing that, Dutta clicked on the link worried that his bank account was indeed closing. After that a web page opened. After entering the details in it, OTP was received to the mobile number. After entering the OTP, the victim was surprised to receive another message that Rs.1 lakh was withdrawn from the account.

Concerned about the disappearance of Rs.1 lakh from the account, the victim called the cybercrime helpline number 1930 several times. But due to lack of response, she lodged a police complaint online through cyber portal. The cybercrime police registered an FIR under section 419, 420 on the basis of the victim’s complaint and took up the investigation.
Police said that many such innocent people are being cheated by cyber crime criminals on a daily basis. It is advised to be alert while opening the links received through SMS, email and WhatsApp. It is stated that they can easily cheat through those links and wipe out all the money in the bank accounts. He said that cyber crooks are committing frauds by trying to create the idea of urgency. Always advised not to share bank account number, ATM PIN, OTP with anyone.
