Bank strike strikes customers



Kochi: Bank unions have announced a two-day strike. The strike was called off after a holiday on Saturday and Sunday, and the four-day absence of banking services did not bother essential customers. Even SBI, the country’s largest public sector bank, was disrupted. Some banks have said they will take precautionary measures to prevent services from being disrupted, but services have been halted due to lack of staff. Those who came to the bank believing the announcement that banking transactions would not be disrupted were also worried. The banking unions are protesting against the government’s policy of privatizing public sector banks. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced in the Union Budget that two public sector banks would be privatized as part of a public sector undertaking. The strike is being called by the United Forum of Bank Unions. Major bank employees’ unions such as the All India Bank Employees Association, All India Bank Officers’ Confederation, National Confederation of Bank Employees and All India Bank Officers’ Association are participating in the bank strike.
