All the 11 accused in the Bilkis Bano case belong to Randhikpur and Singhwad villages in Dahod district, police said. Bilkis Bano’s family also lived in Randhikpur until the 2002 Godhra riots. But the locals said that even till the verdict of the Supreme Court, all the convicts were found in the town. But after the court verdict, all of them locked their houses and said that they are absconding. The father of Govind Nai, one of the convicts, revealed to the media that his son had left home a week before the Supreme Court verdict.
However, Dahod District SP responded to the news that 9 of the 11 convicts related to the Bilkis Bano rape case are absconding. So far they have not received a copy of the Supreme Court verdict.. They have no information about the surrender of the convicts. But he said that now it cannot be suspected that the culprits have fled. The SP claimed that it was known that some of the convicts had gone to their relatives’ houses. It has been revealed that security has been tightened in the villages where the convicts live in view of peace and security since the Supreme Court gave it.
The tragic incident took place in 2002 when riots broke out in Gujarat after the Godhra train burning. At that time seven people of Bilkis Bano’s family, including children, who were 5 months pregnant, were brutally murdered by the assailants. After that Bilkis Bano, who was pregnant, was gang-raped. On January 21, 2008, a special CBI court sentenced 11 accused to life imprisonment in this case. This judgment was upheld by the Bombay High Court. With this verdict, 11 convicts were sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, Gujarat government granted remission to these 11 convicts in 2022. All of them were released from jail on 15th August 2022. Many petitions were filed in the Supreme Court challenging this decision. The Supreme Court, which investigated all of them together, wronged the decision taken by the Gujarat government. The verdict issued that the release of the convicts is invalid.. within 2 weeks they should all surrender in jail.
