KolkataVoting is going on in eight Lok Sabha seats of West Bengal since 7 am on Saturday. Meanwhile, a local leader of Trinamool Congress (TMC) died in a clash in Mahishadal in East Medinipur district.
According to the district police, a clash broke out between Trinamool Congress and BJP workers in Mahishadal under Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday morning. In this clash, local level Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Maibul (42) was killed. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a report on this matter. Meanwhile, political rhetoric has started regarding this tragic incident. Trinamool Congress has blamed BJP workers for the murder.
On the other hand, BJP has claimed that internal rivalry in the ruling party is the main reason behind this. From the initial hours of voting, sporadic incidents of election-related tension have started coming to the fore, mainly in East Medinipur district. Clashes between BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters have also been reported from Moyna under Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency.
In fact, tension arose when BJP candidate from that constituency and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay reached a polling station there. Trinamool Congress supporters blocked his way and started sloganeering. After this, there was a heated argument between Trinamool Congress and BJP workers. However, the timely intervention of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel prevented the situation from worsening.
