The United States is going to introduce a 200% duty on Russian aluminum this week, Bloomberg writes on February 6, citing sources.
According to the agency, such a move has been discussed for several months.
The decision to introduce the duty was dictated by the opinion that Russia is allegedly dumping on the American aluminum market.
According to Bloomberg, US President Joe Biden has not yet approved the introduction of this duty. The White House still fears that this decision will harm the automotive and aerospace industries.
The introduction of the duty, according to the forecasts of the agency, will actually stop the import of aluminum from Russia to the United States. At the moment, 10% of the import of this metal falls on the Russian Federation.
Russia is the second aluminum producer in the world, Gazeta.Ru reminds.
At the end of December 2022, Deputy Prime Minister – Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia Denis Manturov said that the panic forecasts of foreign experts about a possible decline in production in the Russian metallurgy by 24% did not come true.
Thus, in the fall, the EU and the US discussed the possibility of imposing an embargo on the supply of Russian aluminum. However, against the backdrop of these conversations, the demand for the metal increased. Nikolai Vavilov, a specialist in the strategic research department at Total Research, in a conversation with Izvestia, then noted that if such a ban were introduced, it would result in a rapid rise in aluminum prices.
In addition, the same month, Reuters reported that five European industry associations asked the EU authorities not to impose a ban on Russian aluminum, as such restrictions could cause the closure of thousands of European companies.
In general, the Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that the sanctions against Russia have harmed the West itself.
