The Russian special operation to protect the Donbass is forcing the administration of US President Joe Biden to seriously revise the upcoming new version of the national security strategy. On Friday, June 3, according to Bloomberg, citing informed sources.
According to them, earlier versions of the document, which is still being finalized, show how US priorities are changing in response to the special operation and the growing partnership between Beijing and Moscow.
It is noted that the US authorities planned a new version of the strategy back in January, but the growth of tension around Ukraine forced them to reconsider their plans. While the publication dates are still not determined, and, as the source of the agency added, changes can still be made to the project.
In addition to the role of Asia in the interests of US national security, the new strategy emphasizes the importance of Europe as well, which is a departure from an earlier version that focused more on China. At the same time, the text states that the events in Europe and Asia are inextricably linked.
The National Security Strategy, prepared by every administration since the presidency of Ronald Reagan, represents the White House’s foreign policy priorities and goals. It helps American legislators competently prioritize important government issues, including financial ones.
Earlier, on May 6, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks said that the US authorities, in accordance with the new version of the national defense strategy, will continue to consider China as the main strategic rival. At the same time, according to her, Washington fully takes into account the threat from Russia in Europe and beyond.
The text of the National Security Strategy for 2022, prepared by the US Department of Defense, also named China as the main competitor and challenge for Washington.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The Kremlin explained that the tasks of the special operation include the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, the implementation of which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the LPR and DPR as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
