New Delhi: “There is no doubt that technology is our main source of information. But it is not a substitute for books and reading books,” said PM Modi.
Prime Minister Modi addressed the inaugural function of ‘Kalmano Carnival’ book fair organized by Navbharat Sahitya Temple in Ahmedabad. He then said: “This Kalmano Carnival book fair is a great confluence of Hindi, English and Gujarati language books. When I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the state government started the Vanse Gujarat Movement. At present only movements like book fairs are taking Gujarat forward. Both books and texts are fundamental components of our academic teaching.
Vadodara Maharaja Saijirao Gaikward created libraries in all the villages in his territory. Maharaja Bhagwat Singh of Kondal contributed a large dictionary called Bhagwat Ko Mandal. His patron poet Narmad wrote a Gujarati dictionary called Narm Koshi. Gujarat is historically rich in books, authors and literary creation. I want book fairs like this to reach out to every section of people, including the youth of Gujarat. This will give them an opportunity to learn about traditional history and inspire them.
A book fair during the Amrit festival attracts everyone’s attention. Remembrance of our freedom struggle is an important part of the Amrit festival. We are presenting the forgotten episodes of freedom struggle to our country. Events like book fairs can give impetus to this movement in the country. Special emphasis should be given to books related to the freedom struggle and a good foundation should be laid for those writers. This event will prove to be a positive trend in this direction.
One has to read the scriptures, texts and books again and again to become effective and become a useful person. While people seek the help of the website, this is also very important. There is no doubt that technology is our main source of information, but it is not a substitute for books and reading books. When we have a concept in our mind, the brain works to record it deeply and creates a new dimension, creating avenues for new research and discovery. Among these, books are our best friend.
Especially, book reading habit is very important in the changing world environment. Books should be read whether they are physical or electronic. I am confident that events like this will create the much needed engagement among the youth towards books and help them understand their importance,” said the Prime Minister.
