As expected, the country’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced on Monday that there will be a two-year restriction on study permits to be granted to foreign students coming to Canada.
Miller said that this decision was taken to check the growing housing crisis and unemployment problem in Canada. Statistics show that the number of foreign students in Canada has tripled compared to the last decade.
According to the Canadian government, it is estimated that 3.64 lakh students will get permits this year. This is 35 percent less compared to 2023. The immigration minister said that the estimates for 2025 will be revealed at the end of this year. He stated.
Miller said that he also hopes to make adequate housing available along with quality education. He stated that it is not reasonable not to provide facilities to disappoint foreign students who come to Canada with high hopes. Mark Miller clarified that these restrictions will not affect the already granted permits, masters and doctoral students.
However, the government has also made changes in the qualifications related to Post Graduation Work Permits. Under Curriculum Licensing Arrangements, students who have registered from September 2024 will not be given work permits.
Otherwise, the permits are allocated by province according to the new restrictions brought by the Canadian government. Local governments should distribute them to students based on institutions and resources. The Canadian government has issued orders that the stamp of approval of the province is mandatory on permit applications.
For the changes and additions related to this, March 31 has passed.
