A cylindrical object was shot down over northern Canada by an American plane, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported on Saturday. This happened during a joint operation of the Canadian and US air forces over the Yukon province.
Trudeau himself said he gave the order to shoot the object out of the sky. The US airspace monitor NORAD previously announced that it was monitoring the object. It is not known what kind of object it is. Trudeau says he has been in contact with US President Joe Biden. The Canadian Forces will analyze the wreckage.
Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand refuses to speculate on the origin of the object, which she said was cylindrical. It flew at an altitude of more than twelve kilometers and posed a threat to civil aviation, according to the minister. Anand emphasizes that there is no reason to believe that the object shot down caused any damage to the ground.
The message comes a day after US President Joe Biden shot down another high-flying object over the state of Alaska. The US military said on Saturday that it is still not clear what kind of object it was.
‘No human’ on board
It crashed in the extreme northeast of Alaska, near the Canadian border. According to the American pilot, “no human being” was on board the object. In a brief statement, the military said the unknown object has not yet been found in U.S. waters and the investigation is ongoing.
The object over Alaska was a lot smaller than the Chinese balloon that was downed on February 4 and that the Americans say was used by the Chinese to spy. Nevertheless, according to the United States, there was a safety risk for air traffic.
Equipped with spy equipment
The balloon, which had flown west to east across the US from late January and was shot down there in early February, was unmistakably equipped with spy equipment. The balloon would be part of a fleet that would have already flown over 40 countries on five continents, controlled by the Chinese military.
China called the shooting down of the “drift weather balloon” an “obvious overreaction” and complained that it was not informed.
