New Delhi: In 2002, the BBC produced a documentary titled ‘India: The Modi Quest’ about the Gujarat riots. Video links of this film were shared on YouTube and Twitter. The central government issued an order on 21st of last month to ban these. Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against this.
A petition by M.P. Magua Moitra, journalist ‘The Hindu’ N. Ram and lawyer Prashant Bhushan have jointly filed the case. Another petition was filed by advocate ML Sharma. In these petitions, “The BBC documentary has recorded true events. These can be used to get justice for the victims. Therefore, the order issued to ban information shared on social media should be revoked,” it said.
The petitions came up for hearing yesterday before Supreme Court Justices Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundaresh. The central government must submit the original document for the decision to remove the links to the then controversial BBC documentary. The judges ordered that the reply should be filed within 3 weeks. The next hearing on these petitions will be held in April.
