Today, the activities of the 17th edition of the Paralympic Games “Paris 2024” will begin, and its competitions will be held during the period from August 28 to September 8, with the participation of 4,400 male and female athletes, representing 168 Paralympic delegations, competing in 22 sports.
The UAE is participating in this edition with 14 male and female players in five sports: shooting, athletics, weightlifting, judo and cycling. The UAE flag will be raised in the parade of the participating delegations by the duo Ahmed Al Badawi, a player in the cycling team, and Maryam Al Zayoudi, a player in the athletics team.
The opening of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games today coincides with the UAE’s celebrations of “Emirati Women’s Day”, and the female participation in the UAE delegation (6 female players) is 43% of the total number of participants (14 male and female players).
The list of Emirati players in Paris 2024 includes Aisha Al Muhairi, Aisha Al Shamsi (shooting), Noura Al Ketbi, Maryam Al Zeyoudi, and Dhikra Al Kaabi (athletics), and Maryam Al Dhanhani (judo).
Aisha Al Muhairi is a role model for Emirati female athletes, as she is a shooting champion, and has achieved many accomplishments throughout her career, and has achieved the qualifying numbers for the two Paralympic Games “Tokyo 2020” and “Paris 2024”, and has distinguished participations in the World Shooting Championships in New Delhi, Lima and Al Ain, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou, in addition to being a mother of five outstanding children (four girls and a boy).
Al-Mahri expressed her pride in being a daughter of the Emirates who receives all the support and attention from the state and the wise leadership, which qualified her to achieve her position in society as an athlete, a housewife and a mother, as her practice of sports and achieving local and international achievements did not prevent her from caring about her duty as a mother and taking care of her children and their academic future.
She said: “I feel proud to celebrate Emirati Women’s Day, coinciding with my preparations to compete in the Paralympic Games (Paris 2024), amidst the great support, interest and care of the wise leadership. This celebration is the best incentive to achieve accomplishments, and indicates the value and status of Emirati women, and their ability to face any challenge.”
She said: “Motherhood cannot be an obstacle for a working or athletic woman, but rather it is an incentive for her to double her efforts, impose her personality on the course of her life and organize it in the correct way.”
