Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a plan to put an end to the practice of cleaning human waste in underground sewers and sewage tanks in India. He informed that henceforth a structure will be created where these works can be carried out completely by machines.
In all cities and towns of the country only machines should be used for cleaning underground drains and cesspools. He has declared that humans should not be used for these tasks. He mentioned that action will be taken against the concerned officials if humans are involved in these tasks. The Corporation said that the municipal administrations should initiate the process of procuring these machines.
It is noteworthy that the central government had recently informed that 400 people have died while working in underground sewers and waste bins in the last 5 years.
